Job Description Job Description What This Role Does An
Instrument Mechanic performs highly skilled work in both the field
and shop environment. This role focuses on maintaining and
repairing industrial instrumentation and control systems used in
large?scale facilities. Key responsibilities include: Inspecting,
troubleshooting, calibrating, adjusting, servicing, and repairing:
Automatic control systems Indicating, recording, and transmitting
instruments Diagnosing instrumentation and system malfunctions and
determining proper repairs Overhauling and testing control and
measurement devices Working with electronic and pneumatic control
systems Adjusting and programming instrumentation to interface with
process control computers Supporting and maintaining
instrumentation tied to: Process control systems Safety Instrument
Systems (SIS) HVAC controls Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Minimum Qualifications Candidates must meet one of the following
experience requirements: Option 1 Three years of full?time paid
experience as a Steam Plant Assistant with the City of Los Angeles
At least one year must be as a Steam Plant Assistant “A” in the
Instrument Shop or Operations Option 2 Two years of full?time paid
experience as a Building Operating Engineer with the City of Los
Angeles Experience must include operating or maintaining:
High?temperature boilers or Refrigeration equipment totaling 3,000
tons or more Option 3 Two years of full?time paid experience as: An
Electrician , or An Electrical Test Technician (formerly Electrical
Tester) Experience must be with the City of Los Angeles Option 4
Two years of full?time paid experience as an: Instrument Mechanic
HVAC Mechanic Elevator Mechanic Experience must include inspecting,
adjusting, repairing, and testing electronic and/or pneumatic
control systems at facilities such as: Oil refineries Chemical
plants Utility plants Wastewater treatment facilities Option 5 Two
years of full?time paid experience troubleshooting instrumentation
using: Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) Wiring
diagrams Loop drawings Schematics and vendor drawings Hands?on
experience with: Instrument and analyzer control loops Process
control systems Safety Instrument System inputs/outputs HVAC and
PLC systems Experience programming, servicing, repairing, and
maintaining instrumentation tied to process controls Education
Substitutions Four semesters of college coursework in Automated
Instrumentation and Controls may substitute for one year of
experience (Options 1–4) Completion of a three?year
Electrical/Instrumentation apprenticeship may substitute for one
year of experience (Option 5)
